2. Melt the wax in the double boiler over medium-high heat or in a concealed-element heater. Add stearic acid and color/scent when wax is melted. Maintain the wax at 160–180°F by adjusting the heat, if necessary.

3. If there is any water in the mold, dry it out. Apply mold release or vegetable oil. Remember to apply vegetable oil sparingly so that the surface of your candle will not be mottled. If you’re using a silicone rubber or RTV (room temperature vulcanizing) mold, you need to use little or no mold release or vegetable oil because they have a natural tendency to release from wax. When you touch the inside of one of these molds, it has an oily feel to it. If you are using a disposable mold, you can choose not to use mold release, since you can cut and peel the mold off the candle rather than having to release the candle from the mold.

4. Wick your mold (see page 88).

5. Prepare a water bath with cool (not cold) water, having determined the proper water depth before wicking the mold. If you’re using a disposable mold, it may help to pour about ½ inch of wax in and allow it to begin to solidify before proceeding to fill the mold. This will serve two purposes — first, it will seal the handmade wick hole and prevent leakage, and, second, it will reduce the possibility of melting the mold.
